Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German biologist, naturalist and artist whose scientific illustrations became celebrated for their extraordinary detail and beauty. He researched and documented thousands of organisms and is especially well known for Kunstformen der Natur, a landmark collection of illustrations published between 1899 and 1904. His work had an important influence on both scientific illustration and the decorative arts.
